The Red Bull New York returned home for their home opening game of the season. Following a convincing win against Orlando City in the season opener, the team wanted to keep the momentum going. It’s safe to say that the team did not disappoint. Nevertheless, these are the 5 factors that can dictate how the season will look for the Red Bulls.
1- New Coaching Philosophy: Michael Bradley’s managerial appointment for the 2026 season signaled the beginning of the reset process pushed by the club. Sometimes the solution comes from within, so Michael Bradley was the man for the job. His experience with RBNY II not only gave him points in terms of chemistry with the organisation , but also gave him the keys to making transitions between the first and second teams. That alone can give you unlimited resources if needed. However, the key aspect here is the mindset. If the manager is unable to get his message across and get the team behind his idea, nothing will work. Something that seems to be working so far, but only time will tell.
2 – The new Generation: The inclusion of younger talent always opens a pathway for future stars to build a name for themselves. This is usually done slowly, and throughout the course of the season, when key players need rest. Michael Bradley changed all this when he started 3 players aged 17 or younger with the first team against Orlando City. Mathew Dos Santos (17), Adri Mehmeti ( 16), and Julian Hall (17). These last two players even made the team of the matchday for the opening fixture of the season. The momentum continued today after the trio combined to build up and score the winning goal against the New England Revolution in the home opening fixture. If the chemistry continues to build, this squad is hungry for glory this season. This again would go hand in hand with the coaching philosophy previously mentioned.

3- The star power: Almost every team relies on key players to stand out from time to time. The Red Bulls have 3 players who are coming for redemption this season. Emil Foresberg was perhaps the highlight for the team last season, but given the team’s run, inconsistency became constantly associated with his performances. However, it was refreshing to see that he was the one who pushed the change of mentality ahead of the start of the season. Things are off to a good start for him, already having an assist in two games this season. Cade Cowell is the one to watch this season for the Red Bulls. His resurgence with Chivas de Guadalajara set high expectations for him when he joined Red Bull New York. Hopefully, he can continue to find his form in the MLS. Last but not least is Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The German-born striker arrived from Bayern Munich but has yet to make the expected impact for a player with his resume. If things go right and the high-profile players combine with the rising talent, they can build a competitive team for the next few seasons.
4- The supporters: There is no doubt that Red Bull has a loyal fan base. Unfortunately, results have not gone their way. However, if all the factors previously mentioned align, the fans can enjoy a period of success in the coming seasons. The key games that could test this are against the Philadelphia Union, New York City FC, and Inter Miami CF. If the team performs well or achieves results in these key games. The fans will show up in numbers without a doubt.
5- Reaching the Playoffs- A return to the MLS Playoffs is a must for the team after failing to qualify last season. Despite the rebrand, the team is one of the founding MLS members. The team will be looking to go for another run at the MLS Cup, or at least go the distance. But given the number of teams that qualify for the playoffs, this is definitely an objective for the team.
As I said before, this might be an early assessment for the team, but the points that I laid out should be a blueprint for a successful 2026 season. Hopefully theres no need for me to revise these keypoints at the end of the season.
